Poker Hand Rankings

This is our page of Poker Hand Rankings.  This is the first thing you should learn because if you don’t know which hand beats which then you won’t know if you have a hand worth betting or whether you think it is better than what your opponent is holding or not.

In the game of Texas Hold’em poker, the aim is to make the best five card poker hand you can using a combination your own two ‘hole cards’ and the five community cards.  This is so you can win the pot when the hand gets to the showdown stage.  You can also win the hand by bluffing or just simply if everyone else folds before you.

There are ten different types of poker hand you can make using five cards from a 52 card deck.  The highest combination is called a royal flush you have a royal flush is you have ten, jack, queen, king, ace all of the same suit (eg. Spades).  A royal flush is very rare though on average you will get one in about every quarter of a million hands.  The best single card in Texas Hold’em poker is an ace, this is the highest card but you need to try and put it together with other cards to make your best possible hand.  Refer to the poker rankings above.

The lowest ranked hand in Texas hold’em poker is called a high, this is when no other cards match up to make a better hand and the highest card you have is the name of the high (eg. If you have Ace, 2, 7, Jack, 3 your hand is called an ‘ace high’).
